Viking plans to deal with dog owners misusing ball diamonds

Ball players coming to the diamonds to play in Viking may have to dodge around more than other players when chasing down a fly ball.

Some dog owners are using the Town of Viking’s ball grounds as an off-leash park and it’s not sitting well with council.

The matter was discussed at the regular council meeting May 6, said town CAO Don McLeod.

“The ball grounds are being used by unknown persons,” he said, adding: “It’s quite a mess. It’s not a dog park, off leash or otherwise.”

McLeod said if people are going to take their dogs on public property then they should immediately clean up any waste left by their animals.

As a result of discussion, a motion was passed at the meeting, stating: “Council directs administration to develop a response to the issue of pets defecating on public property.”

The matter will be brought back to another council meeting where the recommendations will be considered.
