Viking School took in several students from the Holden area this fall following the closure of the village’s school by the Battle River School Division as of June 2020.

“We did receive some students at the high school level as expected and a couple of students at the elementary and junior high level,” stated Principal of Viking School Adam Madsen.

Madsen estimated that the school currently has about 250 students in total registered for fall classes.

Of those, only “a little over 15 per cent,” are taking their courses on-line as offered by Alberta Education. The rest are going to class at the school.

The school re-entry is going “very well so far,” he said, regarding dealing with policies around the COVID-19 virus.

“On the first day of classes staff familiarized students with their new routines and practices that will be in place this year,” Madsen said. “And everyone has been doing very well so far with implementing the new practices.

“We are really focusing on the ‘we are all in this together’ mindset, focusing on gently reminding each other when we forget one of our new routines,” he said, which include frequent hand sanitizing and wearing masks when in common areas.

The school has three new teachers this year, including Amanda Fornal teaching Grade 4, Lori Brown teaching Grade 5, and Duncan MacGillivray teaching Grade 7 core subjects and construction (shop).
