RESEARCH WORK TAKES BAILEY TO JAPAN

Upon returning from a fast and furious trip to Tokyo, Japan, Bailey Miskew agreed to speak with the Weekly Review about her time there for a specific scientific research project.

Miskew, a current University of Alberta (U of A) pharmacy student, has been employed in her supervisor Dr. Yokota’s lab since 2012 as part of a research team testing Exon skipping as therapy for the genetic muscle disease Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD).

The disease affects young boys and men, often placing them in wheelchairs by 10 years old and making life expectancy only 25 years of age.

According to Miskew, “Exon skipping is a promising therapy that could extend the life of DMD patients and reduce wheelchair use.”
