Kaur to play for Canada’s national badminton team

Jasleen Kaur has been chosen to play for Canada’s national badminton team at the Pan American Games in Salvadore, Brazil from July 15-27. After her Bronze win at the Junior National Championships, Badminton Canada sent a letter to her in early June that Kaur was selected to be part of the Canadian Junior National Badminton Team for a full year.

“I am the only Albertan singles player to be selected,” she said. As one of the top four in the country, Kaur has been selected to play in all three events for U17 including singles, doubles, and mixed doubles.

The news of her impending international competition has her very excited.
“I’m thrilled and happy to be selected,” said Kaur, who has been competing since she was six years old.

Coach and father Jaspal Singh will accompany her and is also very pleased, she said. She will be competing against countries from both North and South America, and feels her chances are good as “Canada is at the top. But I’ve never played in tournaments outside of the country, this is basically my first international tournament.”

In 2012, she did play in the Pan Am Games held in Sherwood Park, Alberta in U13 girls singles. “That was pretty good considering I was only 10 years old.”

This time, she will play within her age category. “Right now I’m preparing really hard, practicing since the invitation came.”

But her big chance comes with a giant price tag of $7,000, which she must raise to make the journey and compete. Already, Viking Royal Purple has presented her with $300. “I am very thankful for that.”
