From the Archives (1918): Sports Day a Great Success

Originally published in The Viking news (July 3, 1918) – Viking entertained the largest crowd in her history last Monday at the annual Sports Day, and everything went of without a hitch. Ideal weather prevailed all day.

The auto parade did not materialize but many had their cars nicely decorated.

The sports started off at 1:30 with a game of baseball between the Viking and Sedgewick junior team, which went to the Sedgewick boys by the close score of 5 to 4, after nine exciting innings.

Next came the horse races. The free for all pony races proved the most exciting. The running races were good. The trot or pace was a close contest between “B.B” driven by J.A Robinson, and “General Joffre” driven by Thos. Fraser. Horses were here from Minburn, Bruce and Tofield.

The basketball game between the Viking and Sedgewick ladies teams was a succession of thrills and fast playing. The Sedgewick girls won by the score of 11 to 17.

The boys and girls foot races were good and some close finishes added to the excitement.

A concert was given in Hilliker’s hall in the evening by local talent which was pronounced most excellent.

The dance which followed held in Collier garage was largely attended. Music was furnished by Cook’s orchestra of Irma.

On account of lack of time in getting together the various details, we cannot give an extended write up this week, but will give a more complete report in our next issue.

The Sports were a great financial success and the Red Cross and Sailors league will benefit materially.
