The Village of Irma has a new CAO. Rudolf Liebenberg started his new position on Sept. 15 and feels that it is a good fit for him.

The 47-year-old originally hails from South Africa and has made Canada his home since 2009.

“All of my family’s in South Africa,” he said. Before immigrating here, he received a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Public Administration followed by a Masters in City Planning.

“I’ve been in the profession for awhile, since 2017,” he says, starting his municipal administration career at the East Prairie Metis Settlement in the High Prairie area before working at Sandy Beach north of Edmonton.

And he’s been studying an online course with the University of Alberta since 2018 to train for his Certified Local Government Manager (CLGM) credentials.

He loves the Rockies and holidayed in Banff with his family, pre-COVID-19, calling it “…the best holiday destination in the world.”

Liebenberg has lived with his wife in Red Deer since 2012 and will commute to Irma for his job.

“My first couple of weeks have been awesome,” he said. “Everyone’s been very friendly. It’s a beautiful place.”

He invited anyone who wants to talk or provide feedback to email or call him at the office.

“I want to work with the people,” he said.
