Weekly Review recognized for 2019 Bruce Stampede coverage
The Weekly Review was recently awarded second prize in the Better Newspapers Competition (BNC) Awards for “superb” coverage of the 2019 Bruce Stampede.
The newspaper won in the BNC Awards of Excellence Category for “Best Feature Story by a Local Writer,” entitled “Muddy Gritty Awesome action at Bruce Stampede.”
The newspaper’s overall coverage of the Stampede received high praise as being “exemplary.”
Photographer Ally Anderson’s photo spread along with Patricia Harcourt’s story were dubbed “fantastic” in the Alberta Weekly Newspapers’ Association’s results package.
“Fantastic photographs,” began the judges’ comments, “spread over three pages, (that) document the 2019 annual Stampede at Bruce, Alberta (population about 50) – site of Canada’s oldest one-day professional rodeo competition.
“This superb photo-feature shows the 106th annual version – downpour, mud, sodden but determined paraders – and in the end, prize money, a program that lasted three days, plus a list of winners: It’s a package of exemplary local journalism.”
Despite the accolades, Weekly Review staff regret that there will be no coverage of this year’s stampede as it was cancelled due to pandemic restrictions.
