Ice to remain in Carena until third week of May
Viking is working to keep spring ice in the Viking Carena Complex but the number of bookings will be the decider if the idea proceeds. Economic Development Officer Doug Lefsrud was given the green light by Viking Council Jan. 21 with a Feb. 22 deadline for bookings.
The town has been inviting hockey teams, associations and hockey camp organizers to come on board for spring ice between April 1 to May 19.
Time slots are available on weekdays and weekends. The caveat was that “the total number of bookings will determine if spring ice in Viking will proceed.” In other words: “The Town of Viking reserves the right to cancel spring ice due to lack of interest.”
“For the past two seasons the Carena facility has kept the ice in until the end of April, mainly rented by the Killam Battle River Sharks and Kings’ spring hockey teams,” said Lefsrud in his report.
“We have been approached by these two teams inquiring about availability of facility ice again this year. After their inquiry a message was sent to the Silent Ice Super League…asking if this would be something they would be interested in and participate in.” They heard back that the league doesn’t play spring hockey but would pass the word on to individual teams that do.
Said Steven Goertzen, Director of Operations, Silent Ice, in an email reply: “Our travelling teams have had nothing but great things to say about your facility and arena staff. It has been a pleasure to get to know people around the rink and we hope to use your beautiful facility for many years to come.”
