Indoor Activity Centre almost ready for Grand Opening

The Viking Families 4 Fun (VF4F) Indoor Activity Centre will be officially opening at the Viking Carena on Family Day, Feb. 20.

The Grand Opening of the play area will coincide with the Town’s various Family Day activities.

VF4F board members said the Activity Centre, which includes playground equipment and two ministick/floorball rinks, has been a work in progress for more than three years, despite construction on the project only starting earlier this year.

On Feb. 6, police received a complaint of a break and enter at an oilfield site at a rural location. Thieves gained entry into the office and a storage building and stole numerous items. The investigation into this crime is ongoing.

Viking, Irma see population increases in 2016 Census

The first results from Canada’s 2016 Census have been released. Currently, the only results available are population and dwelling counts, however more detailed results will be released throughout the year.

According to the Census, though Beaver County as a whole experienced a population increase, communities in the area have seen both increases and decreases in population in the last five years.

On Jan. 30, a citizen contacted police to advise she had received random text messages from an unknown female and felt it could be in relation to some sort of phone scam. Police advised her not to respond to the texts and to contact police if the messages persisted.

That night, police received a complaint of a stolen trailer in Viking. The complainant advised his homemade trailer had been stolen from his yard sometime during the day.

Food bank usage increases by seven times in four years

The Viking and Holden Area Food Bank had a very busy year in 2016. In fact, for more than four years, usage of the food bank has been increasing steadily.
