Locals support Fort McMurray tragedy
This past week Fort McMurray was devastated by an out of control wildfire that swept through the city, forcing tens of thousands of people to evacuate. Many of them don’t know if they will ever see their homes again.
Despite these grim circumstances, Albertans have banded together to provide help and support to those evacuees. Citizens of Viking and surrounding area immediately jumped in to do whatever they could to help.
Many people texted a $5 donation to the Canadian Red Cross, and used social media to encourage others to do the same. Anyone wanting to make a difference can also do this by texting REDCROSS to 30333. Those sharing this information on social media have stated that although the donation is small, anything helps during a time like this.
It is also noted that both the Federal and Provincial Government have pledged to match any donations made to the Canadian Red Cross. In addition, according to the Government of Alberta website, the Provincial Government will provide the Red Cross with $2 million in seed money to help kick-start operations.
Here at the Weekly Review office, donations are being accepted on behalf of the Canadian Red Cross for those affected by the fires… for more see the May 10/16 Weekly Review.
