Snow sculptures

The cold temperatures and howling winds of the past couple of weeks can easily bring Arctic living to mind. These snow sculptures which mimic stone figures known as inuksuit, appeared north on Torlea Road. It is not known who built the structures but more than a dozen figures line the roadside. Inukshuk, the singular of inuksuit, means “in the likeness of a human” in the Inuit language. The actual inuksuit are monuments made of unworked stones used by the Inuit for communication and survival. The traditional meaning of the inukshuk is “Someone was here” or “You are on the right path.” The Inuit were the first people to inhabit portions of Alaska, Arctic Canada and Greenland.
