Food Bank usage up in 2011

The Viking Food Bank distributed 62 food hampers last year.  That number is up from 57 in 2010 but a fair ways from the 86 distributed in 2009.

Food bank clients must live between Holden and Irma to be eligible to access the Viking Food Bank.  In the early years of the food bank, which began in 2002, the majority of the clients were from the Holden area.  However there is a growing trend towards fewer Holden clients and more Viking clients.  Last year 38 hampers went to Viking, 14 to Holden and 5 each to Kinsella and Bruce.

Frigid Days Bring Back Memories

Frigid Days Bring Back Memories

by Irene Toverud

Do you remember the days so long ago when there was no central heating, no insulation in houses, cold floors because of unheated cellars? Do you remember windows thickly covered with frost because storm windows hadn’t been thought of yet, wood and coal for heating and cooking; and when on very cold nights, someone had to get up during the night to replenish the fuel?  I’ve even heard that some people did stay up all night to ensure that the fire didn’t go out especially if they had only wood.

Once again we are very fortunate to have a time in history recalled by one of our gifted senior writers. Author Irene Toverud says the two days of minus 50 degree weather last month brought to mind winters of her childhood. Among her memories is the arrival of parcels placed with the Eaton’s Company and the excitement of receiving new felt boots. Above is a page from the 1920-21 Fall and Winter Eaton’s catalogue.

From left, Katie Hrabec, Hannah Bueckert, Nicole Bueckert (Clifford book), Kathryn Bueckert, and Chloe Radley show the gifts they received from Scholastic, Frontier College and Lone Pine Publishing.

On Friday and Saturday, Jan. 27 and 28, Beaver County Family Literacy held Family Literacy Day Events called  “Journey to Learning.”

Several communities participated in the event, but for Holden, this was a notable first.

WORD ON THE STREET

On Feb. 2 police were called to a traffic complaint on Highway 14.

A cattle liner was turning off of the range road and slipped into the ditch.  Traffic was becoming backed up due to both lanes of traffic being blocked.

Members attended the scene and the cattle liner had managed to get out of the ditch prior to police arrival.
