Viking hit hard by hail: Chance of bumper crops pounded down

STORM DAMAGE CAUSES EMPTY PODS

The promise of a bumper crop  in the Viking area was destroyed when a storm pushed through Thursday night, Aug. 23, bringing with it pounding rain and crushing hail.

Dark clouds started to form mid-afternoon and just after 5 p.m. large drops of rain bounced off the streets. The rain was followed by high winds accompanied by thunder and lightening.

In a matter of minutes Highway 619 was covered with hail which made driving conditions dangerous and crops, some in swaths and some still standing, were beaten into the ground.
