Viking residents hear full story of historic dig after human skull found on farm

There are some 40,000 recorded archaeological sites in Alberta, and the Rozmahel farm near Viking is now one of those sites, said Caroline Hudeck-Cuffe from Alberta Historic Resources Management Branch on Wednesday, April 25 at the Viking Legion.

The evening was hosted by the Rural Outreach and Agricultural Renaissance Society (ROARS) as part of the society’s goals to educate the community about its history.

Hudeck, along with Aaron Wilson, Wendy Unfreed, Pam Mayne-Correia, a forensic anthropologist of the University of Alberta, and Ron Lameman, from the Confederacy of Treaty 6 First Nations, spent the day at the Viking School, talking to students about the historic discovery of human remains that occurred last fall at the Rozmahel farm, and what happened since.

The evening’s presentation offered residents a more in-depth look at the science and history behind the story.
