VIKING POPULATION DECREASES

While at least two neighbouring communities registered a population increase, Viking’s population fell  by 44 according to the 2011 census results released last week by Statistics Canada. Viking’s population was 1085 in 2006  and fell to 1041 in 2011.

Mayor Marlene Grandinetti said she is pleased with the results and says the loss will  have little or no effect on municipal grant dollars.

In Viking the total private dwelling is listed as 473 with the population density per square kilometre at 277.1.

Viking’s -4.1 per cent population drop comes when the province of Alberta is showing a 10.8 per cent increase in population growth. The total province population rose from 3,290,350 to 3,645,257 from 2006 to 2011.
