MIDGET PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIP BRINGS BACK MEMORIES OF 1979 VICTORY

It took 37 years but last weekend in Ponoka the Viking’s Dee Jay Plumbing Gas Kings re-claimed the Midget Boys Provincial Championship. Making the victory even more memorable was the fact that a couple of this year’s players were able to share the win with their dads, members of the 1979 winning team.

Richard Lefsrud and David Darling were among the dads who watched last weekend as their sons (Brett Lefsrud and Skyler Darling) helped the Gas Kings defeat the Vermilion Tigers at the championship tournament in Ponoka.

The well-matched teams fought to a 2-2 tie in the third period. With just zero point one second remaining, Viking scored an exhilarating goal and won the game and the championship.

Thirty-six years ago in a three-day tournament which took place in Grimshaw,  the Viking Knights of Columbus Midgets won the 1978-79 Provincial “C” Championship.
