STRIVING FOR SUSTAINABILITY HAD BASIS IN VIKING

Karyssa Arnett-zero waste audit group   Karyssa Arnett, daughter of Brent and Trudy Arnett, is playing an important leadership role for sustainability on campus at the University of British Columbia as she shares her passion for the environment with others.

As a member of Common Energy, a student sustainability organization, Arnett recently took part in leading a series of workshops on campus catered towards making one’s own household items including shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, soap, saran wrap, and lip balm.

“Each of our workshops has a specific goal to achieve and this particular one is to promote the use of more environmentally friendly products that can be more cost effective and easy to make yourself. Many of the soaps and shampoos commonly used contain harsh chemicals that are usually not very biodegradable and can contribute to contamination of ecosystems affected by our wastewater,” says Arnett.

Arnett states that, “Being environmentally conscious and striving for sustainability is a huge part of who I am today and it definitely stemmed from my experiences growing up and my experiences leaving home.
