The late Hazel Miskew, columnist

Hazel Miskew the author of the monthly Vialta News column passed away suddenly last week and she will be sadly missed by readers and staff at the Weekly Review.

Hazel not only wrote the monthly column which gave readers details on all the happenings at Vialta Lodge but she often would pen stories about years gone by and was generous enough to share them with Viking Review readers.

In one such story which she entitled, Coming to Kinsella -That’s How it Was she told of being, “born and raised on the wide open prairies of Southern Sask. and Alberta and it was a sudden change for me to emigrate to the Kinsella area. Entering the hamlet and living in the Rodino district 12 miles northeast in the beautiful parkland of Alberta was a new experience for a young woman.

Coming to this area as a new bride of Ambrose Beckett, was exciting and venturesome. He got a compassionate leave from Suffield Experimental Army Station to take over the farm for his very ill parents.”

The story went on to describe her early memories of her new home and took the reader onto the bustling streets of her new home where she recalled buying a  Bobsled and  the couple’s first set of dinnerware from the local Red and White Store.

In 1976 Hazel Beckett, a widow and mother of three married children, married widower Marshall Miskew.

Hazel had the elegance and wisdom of age coupled with the imagination of youth.    Her monthly column covered a variety of subjects and spoke to readers of all ages.

     She will be missed.
