REMEMBER: Love of country was reason for serving

In the spring of 1942 Viking’s Alexander Elmer Thomson proved his love for his country and joined the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF). His discharge records show that when his service ended, he was transferred to General Reserve, so, in a way, he is still part of the RCAF.

Alexander, who says everyone called him Elmer, was born in the fall of 1918 and started school at Poplar Hill in 1925. After finishing public school, Elmer worked with his dad on the farm until 1942 when he signed up to defend the country of his birth.

“I love Canada,” he said during a recent interview from his home at Extendicare, Viking.

Along with his wife, Mabel, and his son, Alan, Elmer recalled his years of service as a wireless operator.
