Local hunters bag wild boar NE of Viking

The plan to spend the early afternoon and evening moose hunting about 10 kilometers northeast of Viking turned into a hunting expedition which ended with an almost unbelievable result.
Shannon Lancaster, a provincial meat inspector, joined Randy Petroskey and Petroskey’s two sons, Rory and Jessie, for an afternoon hunt in search of a moose.

“Randy’s son had a moose tag and we headed out to an area not far from Viking where we had heard there had been some moose sightings,”Lancaster explained.

He said it was about 3:45 in the afternoon, just as the light was starting to wane when they spotted an animal step from the brush at the edge of a field.

“The animal was at the edge of a slough. It looked too small to be a moose … at first we thought it may be a bear,” Lancaster said.

He said with the help of binoculars they were able to get a good look and realized what they were looking at was a wild boar.

“No, I have never seen one in the wild. I have seen one or two through my work in various plants but I have never seen one in the wild.”
