Residents evacuated at Extendicare due to sprinkler system break and flood

Local volunteers and emergency personal were quick to respond to a call to assist in the evacuation of Viking Extendicare residents Sunday morning. The first call for assistance went out at about 8 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 25 when a break in the water sprinkler system caused flooding at the facility.

An estimated 54 residents were moved from the facility within two hours into the nearby hospital and Viking Lodge.

Viking Mayor Marlene Grandinetti said all the residents are safe and being well cared for.

She said it is hoped that some or all of the residents may be returned to the facility as early as Sunday evening.
